What the investigation needs to establish
A wet patch in the ground does not necessarily sit over the failure. Water may follow a trench or an easier route through the soil. Pipe layout, ground conditions and useful detection results are considered together before excavation is proposed.
Bring the useful details
Identify known buried services, earlier repairs, restricted vehicle access and any surfaces that require particular care.
Keep the boundaries clear
Depth, pipe material and ground conditions affect detection. Landscaping, paving and other reinstatement are excluded.
A method with a purpose
Tracer gas detection may form part of the investigation when the conditions suit it. We explain what the result supports and what remains uncertain.
